Mini-Lessons

The mini-lessons in this package are designed for use with independent reading or reader’s workshop. You can use them to introduce or review these basic elements of fiction writing: opening lines, setting, point of view, tone, characterization, theme and author style. After your lessons, students will explore each concept in the novels they are reading. Creative extensions will allow students to extend their understanding by experimenting with each concept in their own writing.

Writing Prompts

These writing prompts are perfect to use as bell ringers for independent reading or reader's workshop. Each one asks students to reflect on -- or connect to -- some aspect of their reading, such as character, theme, point of view, conflict, or setting. Some prompts ask them to make a creative connection. Then, a further slide will instruct students to make one or more revisions to improve their response.

Stations for Learning to Respond to Texts

Independent Reading Stations

These learning stations can be used and adapted for independent reading even if students don’t have a dedicated reader’s notebook. The tasks at each station require that students look for, and write about, different elements of fiction. Included are titles and task cards for: opening lines, setting, point of view, tone, character, conflict, author's message, author's style, great quotes and questions.

Task Cards for Talking about Books

Task cards are versatile tools that make your students active and reflective learners. These cards can also help you manage independent reading, something that can be difficult when students are at various places in different books. The questions on these cards can help them have meaningful discussions about books, even though they aren't reading the same thing.

Reader's Notebooks

I love the idea of a reader's notebook--they are powerful tools for critical thinking as students read. But I also know that I am often pressed for time and, therefore, can't devote much of it to the cutting and pasting of interactive journals--as fun as that might be!
So, I created this notebook. It is one that can take the students beyond chapter questions and allow them to explore their own questions, thoughts and theories about the texts they read. It requires them to be more independent as they explore the author's ideas and purpose in writing. (Digital option included).

Point of View & Perspective Unit

This unit is meant to be used while you are doing independent reading or a full class novel, and has two objectives: a) to help students understand point of view & perspective and how they work together b) to give students an opportunity to view the world through another person’s perspective. The file contains a variety of slideshows, lessons, activities and assignments that will review point of view and perspective with students and then provide them with ways to practice their understanding.

Understanding Character

Character analysis is a staple of secondary ELA studies. However, students will sometimes focus too much on the superficial with the characters they analyze. This product is designed to help students explore the character of the people around them, the characters in their novels and even themselves. There are five activities: use them all or pick and choose the ones that will work best with your curriculum and your students.

Creative Writing Assignments

These writing assignments link my students’ writing to their reading. Each one is inspired by a special narrative technique in a popular young adult novel. The students do not have to have read the text to do the assignment, but it may inspire them to pick it up and give it a try! Each assignment includes a link to the books description on Amazon. There, students can “look inside” the book to see the technique highlighted in the assignment. Alternatively, if you have the book on your shelves, they can check out the real thing!

Writing a Personal Narrative

Use this assignment to guide your students through the process of writing a personal narrative. While this product is not a detailed lesson on the genre, it does guide the students to follow the steps necessary to write an effective, compelling story. They will have the opportunity to do pre-writing to develop their ideas and to complete tasks that will help them focus on the elements of narration. The mentor texts will give them further guidance and inspiration, and a slideshow will focus their revision process before they do a final copy. (Everything is editable, should you need to tweak).
