Writing Challenges
Sometimes our writers need a little inspiration, a little nudge to get them started. These writing challenges are perfect for that. You can use them to add some fun to the writing process or to review and practice skills that students have already learned. There are five different challenges for you to choose from, including online options that can be used at home or in school.

Word Choice Challenge
Use this activity when you want students to practice the art of deliberately choosing words to effectively capture meaning. They will use what they have learned about showing, rather than telling to write a descriptive paragraph. Then, their classmates will guess what they were trying to show & identify the techniques they used to do so.

Figurative Language Challenges
There are 5 different challenges that can be used to teach students to use figurative language effectively in their writing (options for metaphors, personifi-cation, allusion, hyperbole, and idioms & imagery). Each is designed to give students practice with the process required to create their own figurative devices which will help them become better close readers.

Figurative Language Bingo
This bingo board is not only a great visual reminder for your students, but also a fun challenge that will help them learn to identify and understand figurative devices in the texts they read.

The Vocabulary Challenge
Teach students to use more complex vocabulary in a fun, active way - rather than passively memorizing words. These challenges will engage your students in activities designed to introduce them to -- and use -- new vocabulary.

Supporting Ideas Stations
Show students how to support their ideas with this stations activity. This activity will take them through a process they can follow when they need to develop an idea and give them practice in the skill of supporting one single point.

Narrative Writing Task Cards
Do your writing students need a little nudge of inspiration sometimes? These versatile task cards can provide just that. Students can draw task cards that will give them ideas for opening lines, setting, character development & motivation, conflict, and plot twists, as well as ones that ask them to use certain language techniques for effect.

Sentence Construction Games
Use these games and activities to help your students learn about the different sentence types: simple, compound, complex and compound-complex. You'll be able to use individual and group activities to help students practice writing diverse sentences. Use these as bell ringers, for brain breaks or for early finishers.

Group Challenge Task Cards
This challenge builds skills for grammar, poetry, vocabulary and research.Use them when you have a little time to fill, when you want to have a brain break, or when you want to review the skills that the challenges cover. They allow students to work together and learn from each other as they complete each task. You can even use these for ongoing challenges to keep the competition level high!

AND THIS BONUS RESOURCE!
Who knew that getting students ready to write an argumentative essay could be so much fun? The activity is ready to engage your students as they learn the process to follow when they write in an argumentative format. Using a challenge, they will be guided step-by-step as they create arguments and counter-arguments for a topic.
First, you will show your students how the argumentative challenge works by taking them through a practice session where they will follow each step and read two mentor texts that will illustrate what their end products should look like.
